Volunteering as an EMT with the Falls Church Volunteer Fire Department is rewarding, flexible, and more accessible than many people realize. Despite our 100-year history of service, some myths still keep potential volunteers on the sidelines. Letâs set the record straight and debunk some of the most common misconceptions about being a volunteer EMT.
1. MYTH: Only people with medical backgrounds can volunteer as EMTs.Â
Fact: You donât need any prior medical experience to volunteer at FCVFD. If youâre ready to take on the challenge, we want to hear from you!
We provide all necessary training, and all other related costs are reimbursed. Whether you’re a student, working professional, or retiree, weâll equip you with the skills and support you need to succeed as an EMT and grow in your role.
2. MYTH: Volunteering eats up all your free time.
Fact: Our volunteers successfully balance EMT shifts with school, full-time jobs, and family life.
At FCVFD, weâre committed to creating flexible scheduling that works around your lifestyle, while still ensuring youâre meeting training and service requirements.Â

3. MYTH: EMTs are only responsible for transportation.Â
Fact: Thereâs much more to the role. EMTs respond to a wide range of emergency calls, access patients, assist in critical care, and work as part of a cohesive team alongside other firefighters and paramedics.
Itâs hands-on, meaningful, and no two shifts are the same.
4. MYTH: Volunteering is only for young people.
Fact: Our volunteers come from all age groups and backgrounds. What matters most is your dedication to helping others. Regardless of your age, thereâs a place for you at FCVFD.
Not sure if operational service is for you? We also offer administrative volunteer opportunities in areas like fundraising, logistics, and life safety education. Learn more about non-operational roles.
5. MYTH: Thereâs no long-term benefit to volunteering as an EMT.
Fact: Volunteering as an EMT can open doors to careers in healthcare, emergency services, leadership, and more.
Many of our current Operations Officers started as first-time volunteers. Youâll gain valuable clinical skills, leadership experience, and a sense of community service that will make your resume stand out.
