Steps to Becoming a Volunteer EMT With the Falls Church Volunteer Fire Department

This National EMS Week, we are recognizing the dedicated, compassionate volunteers who respond to emergencies in Falls Church every day—and sharing how you can join their ranks and inspire the next generation of care providers.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a volunteer EMT in Northern Virginia but weren’t sure where to start—this guide walks you through every step. Whether you’re a college student, a working professional, or someone simply looking to give back, the Falls Church Volunteer Fire Department (FCVFD) provides all the training and support you need to succeed.

And don’t let “fire” in our name mislead you—our volunteer EMTs concentrate solely on emergency medical services, and no fire experience is required.

1. Submit an Interest Form and Attend an Information Session

Start by filling out our interest form. Once submitted, you’ll receive a follow-up email with details about membership opportunities and an invitation to our next volunteer information session held monthly.

These sessions are a great opportunity to:

    • Meet current FCVFD members,
    • Ask questions about training, scheduling, and certifications, and
    • Learn about both Operational and Administrative volunteer roles.

Even if you’re not ready for the physical demands of EMS, there’s still a place for you to serve your community.

    2. Complete an Application and Interview

After attending the Information Session, you’ll receive a formal application. Once submitted, our membership committee will review your application, complete a reference check, and contact you to schedule a virtual interview.

During the interview, we’ll discuss your background so it can be shared with voting members, review expectations and time commitments, and answer any questions you may have.

We’re looking for people who are motivated, dependable, and eager to learn—not just those with prior EMS experience. While the application process isn’t competitive, certain medical conditions may prevent someone from serving as an Operational member. In those cases, we encourage applicants to consider Administrative membership. If you’re passionate about helping others, you’re already halfway there.

      3. Begin Department Orientation

After completing the application process—which takes about one month—you’ll be officially voted in by our membership committee and begin your Orientation and training.

During orientation, you’ll learn about the history and mission of our department, review department rules and expectations, and complete essential certifications like  CPR and First Aid. You’ll also receive training on HIPAA compliance, harassment prevention, and discrimination awareness. These foundational steps ensure you’re ready to serve safely, professionally, and confidently as part of our team.

        4. Complete Required Training

Before you can begin answering calls as a certified EMT, you’ll complete the following milestones:

          • NFPA Physical Exam: Confirms you are medically fit to join as an operational member.
          • EMT-Basic Training: Completed through a local training program. If you’re not  already certified, FCVFD offers reimbursement for this course. Full details on the reimbursement process will be shared during Orientation.
          • FCVFD Recruit Program: In-house training for ACFD medical protocols, communications, safety, equipment use, and a driving overview.

Once you complete these training requirements, you’ll be fully prepared  to staff the apparatus and start your EMT journey!

          5. Run Shifts and Serve the Falls Church Community

You’ll work alongside other trained volunteers to respond to emergencies and save lives. We offer flexible scheduling, mentorship, and opportunities for growth – whether in leadership or advanced certifications.
